Steak & Ale: Lunch

October 1, 2007

I have never had Steak & Ale for lunch most likely because of its reputation of being pricey and for lunch I never feel like doing something pricey that is what dinner is for. But I was pleasantly surprised the S&A has 10 lunches under $7. I wanted to indulge and go with the Prime Rib Panini, which was not on the 10 under 7 menu, but i decided to go with something more common in the Smoke Cheddar Burger.

The burger was good sized as which you would expect for a $7 cheeseburger they claim it to be a 1/2 pound. The beef was excellent and on par with some of the best burgers I have ate although it was cooked more well done than i prefer but not bad enough to affect flavor. On top of the beef was a hardy helping of cheddar cheese that was melting as it lay there; very gooey which i love. the bun was big and grilled which is always a plus but with a lack of condiments (to which there were none served with it) made the burger seem a little dry. On the side it came with a piece of lettuce (that was wilty), a single slice of tomato (that took up approx 1/4 of my burger when place on it), and lots of red onion (strong). I had a side order of steak fries along with it and this turned out to be a very good idea because they were delicious. Steak fries are usually hit or miss with me but these rank right at the top with Cracker Barrel’s.  Light salt and seasoning crispy around the outside and little soft in the middle.

Overall i was pleased, the burger overcame the shortcomings that was the garnish and dryness to be a very good meal. if you throw on some mayo and another slice of tomato, or two, this is a top tier burger. Add on the excellent fries and for $7 you have an outstanding lunch at a nice place.

TOTAL SCORE = 7/10

Top 5: Chicken Tenders

September 29, 2007

To kick these Top 5 lists off right I chose my old favorite: Chicken Tenders. I take my tenders seriously, if a restaurant has good chicken tenders I’ll always give it another shot. But, if they aren’t any good then that place is non-existent to me (cough, Applebee’s, cough). Now to the list:

5.  Springfield Brewing Co.: New found treasure on my part. Flaky, crispy, and thick! ***¾

4.  Ebbet’s Field: The best part of these tenders is that they are always HOT when they are served. Plus, it is a local favorite. ****

3.  Texas Road House: Beer-battered like Cheddar’s alomost as good but not quite there. ****¼

2.  Skybox: These almond crusted tenders add a unique and welcomed taste to a classic. Plus cheap beer. ****½

1.  Cheddar’s: I have yet to find someone who does love these chicken tenders. Beer-battered, thick tenders that are fluffy and plentiful. *****

SFO Lunch

San Fransisco Oven
8″ Aloha Pizza, Zinfandel Chicken and Feta Salad

The Aloha Pizza is one of my favorites pies. Smoked BBQ Sauce on a sourdough crust with ham and pineapple chunks. Excellent Italian flavor in every bite. The 8 inch is cut into quarters, of course, which makes for easy handling. On the down side there are only 5 (maybe 6) pineapple chunks on the pizza and it is the best part. Also, it is a little dry because the skimp on the sauce unlike most pizza places that overdue it in that aspect. If they doubled the pineapple it would be a excellent dish, instead it is just merely good.

Two words can describe the Zinfandel Chicken and Feta Salad: cinnamon crisps. These come with every Zinfandel salad and are outstanding. Warm buttery pita bread slices covered with cinnamon and sugar. These come on the side of the salad or can also be ordered as a desert. Do yourself a favor and get some. The salad itself is hardly second fiddle to the cinnamon crisps. It has a mix of field greens and Romaine lettuce, roasted chicken strips, Feta cheese, cran-raisins, toasted almonds slices and a Zinfandel blush vinaigrette. Aside from the chicken strips that are very Oscar Mayer, this is one of the top salads you can find. The dressing is very mild with little tang for a vinaigrette which i find as a big plus. You cant beat Feta cheese in a salad and the cran-raisins are surprisingly tolerable.
